Pittsburgh Chess Club
Summer 2008 Chess Camps

with International Chessmaster Jerry Meyers

Location: The air-conditioned Pittsburgh Chess Club, 5604 Solway St, in Squirrel Hill

These chess camps provide a chance for your child to receive individualized attention in a small group setting from Chessmaster Jerry Meyers. These camps combine both learning and fun.

Camps are limited to a maximum of 8 students.

On our first day, I have an orientation where the students meet each other. Then I teach them how to record moves (if they don't already know), and give them some tips on how to make the recording go more smoothly. After that, I play a simul against all the students and help them record the moves.

Over the course of the week, we start each day by reviewing some of the games the students played against me. Then I match the students up against each other, and we end the day by reviewing these games. Going over your own games with a strong player is one of the best ways to improve.

The use of chess clocks is explained during these camps to all students who are not familiar with them.

On our last day, in addition to regular games, we will have a free pizza party, and some fun contests, like fastest board setup and speed chess. Ribbons will be awarded to winners of all competitions and everyone will receive a chess keychain or some similar item.

There are also chances for students to ask questions about specific openings or other chess topics they are curious about.

All students will receive a free scorepad to record their games, and the slow games will be rated.

Each camp is divided by playing level of the participants. Beginner/Advanced Beginners is for newer players, or rated under 550. Intermediate is roughly 550 to 1000. Advanced is over 900.

Students may register for multiple weeks and often do!
